no mouse device

Hello everyone, Im brand spankin new and I just installed debian.  Im not 
sure ive completed installation properly, but I have no mouse device(no 
/dev/mouse ).  What did I do wrong?  I tried reinstalling with  a different 
mouse type, but still doesn't work.  Is there a way I can manully install my 
mouse?  It is a mouse with a ps/2 connector and two buttons and has compaq 
branded on it.  What do I do now?
