pretty much. dpkg-buildpackage will create a debian package the way
that the official debian package works, but linked against your
libraries. this is sometimes necessary if you have conflicts like you
said. on top, the debian approach is preferable as it integrates with
apt/dpkg/dselect and thus fullfills dependencies and other stuff...
