I had a problem recently where gdm wouldn't let me log in. I checked the logs (logged into vc) and found that the problem was I ran out of space on / (where /tmp was) so the gnome startup stuff couldn't create files in /tmp. I fixed it by running "apt-get auto-clean". You may have a different problem, but I would check the X logs and your disk space. -D -- "Don't use C; In my opinion, C is a library programming language not an app programming language." - Owen Taylor (GTK+ developer)
