Which means that you're not running gpm.
When I did
cd /etc/X11
ed XF86Config[-4]
I got no such file or directory.
Sorry; I should have been more clear. The file name used to be (in X
version 3.x and previous) XF86Config. With version 4.x of X, the file
has been renamed to XF86Config-4, unless .... Sometimes version 4 keeps
the old name (depending on whether a file with that name exists already
or not, etc).
So look for either XF86Config or XF86Config-4.
