You can modify it. But I won't recommend it either. The best (the Debian) way of doing such is running the modconf program as root. It will edit the /etc/modules file that comes with Debian, as well as automagically configure /etc/modules.conf to its proper settings. You can choose the modules you'd want to load. >2.
