Karsten posed real answer using "ar". There is a easy way if Redhat packaged mc (midnight commander) properly. On my Debian box, if I fire up: $ mc and point to any package *.rpm, *.tgz, *.deb (RH, Slack, DEB) and press enter, I get their contents listed as if it is sub-directory.
