In this case, try walking through the scripts in /etc/rc0.d and running
them.  You'll want to run "<script> stop" for the scripts starting 'K',
and "<script> start" for the ones starting 'S'.  This is what's
happening during shutdown.  You can recover your system at least up
until you hit 'S40umountfs' by issuing an 'init 1' and 'exit', which
should bring you to your default runlevel.

I've also found that at times stopping and restarting the X server can
restore console sessions.
