while i haven't experienced this myself under normal circumstances .. i have had it when trying to ssh in a chroot enviornment. turns out ssh or openssh(or both?) requires a entry for the userid running ssh in /etc/passwd without one it spits back "you dont exist! go away!". have had the same error on win32 with SSH without a /etc/passwd so my best reccomendation would be to check to be sure /etc/passwd is there and is not curropted and has an entry for the UID your using to do tasks. nate
