<snip> >You have a mixture of 3.3.6 and 4.1 packages on your system How is a newbie expected to avoid this situation? You know, I've been around the block a time or two, but getting a wee bit frustrated with debian install issues. >>So my questions are: >> >>1. Perhaps I assumed that if I got the all the debs from "unstable" they would hang together as a set. I do take note of prompts and warnings, and have already put in many hours of reading, scouring man pages, HOWTOs, etc to try to help myself. Learning a good deal from the var/log files also. >> >>2. Is it possible that XF86Setup itself was >>somehow not updated? > >XF86Setup is for 3.3.x So it seems. I have attempted to configure X using the 4.x tools, and making some very slight progress. >>4. Go to http://people.debian.org/~bunk/ and >read the instructions on how to install XF4 on potato with apt-get. Nothing at that link relating to the problem at hand. Or else I'm blind. Thanks for the reply, tho. I guess I'll just keep plodding along. Feel free to respond privately, if this is something better taken offline. Sorry if my attitude is showing. rafe b.
