Try running "startx &" in a console, then switch back to the console when X starts. Then run "sawfish &" and "gnome-terminal &". Switch back to X. If you see the apps there, that is good news :-). Then you should be able to run "gnome-panel" and "gnome-cc" and select a WM to use the next time gnome starts. Logout (via panel), then try "startx" again. HTH, -D
