The private key is only required on the "local" machine. It's safest to only keep it there, and then have your public key in the authorized_keys2 file of all machines on which you have accounts. (You don't need to keep separate files for each public key also; it just has to be in authorized_keys2). Also, if you're having trouble getting it working, also ensure that your local ssh is looking the correct place for the private key.
