Right, sorry I see from rereading your description. It is presumably trying to start gdm, which it will try and do a thousand or so times before giving up for a while. If you uninstall gdm / kdm / xdm ("dpkg -r gdm xdm kdm") you will get the login prompt and be able to log in, then go 'startx' to start an Xsession.
