i've had 2 IBM thinkpads in a row and i've been very happy with the
hardware support under linux. my latest is an IBM T30, which is
basically a "Desktop replacement" laptop, except it weighs under 5 lbs.
it has onboard wireless, onboard ethernet, (unsupported under linux)
onboard winmodem, 1.8 GHz p4, ATI Radeon, 40 gig hdd and 256 megs of
ram. aside from the modem, everything works really well under linux,
and you can get a new one for about $1500. the laptop's exterior is
titanium, which means it feels (and is) really sturdy.
