Thanks, but neither of the suggested solutions (installing xfs or changing the order of the FontPath lines in XF86Config) helped. I will next look into setting a default font for GtkWidget in the .gtkrc (or in my case, creating the .gtkrc first), as suggested by Mark S. Mathews in another post.
