Thanks for the reply. That is the way I did set it, using echo 1 > ... . But when I set any other kernel setting, for example /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward, I can confirm its setting using cat ... ; it returns 1 or 0 according to whether it has been set or not. I can't confirm whether /proc/sys/net/ipv4 has been set because cat ... returns a varying integer like 76 or -25 instead of 1 or 0; the value changes every few seconds. That is my problem. This is different to all the other kernel settings. I need to know for sure whether this setting is enabled or not for security reasons.
