I think that's ill informed advice.  Some of the best books on informatics
are from them, like:

  A discipline of programming,  by Edgard Dijkstra

  Operating Systems, by Tanenbaum

  Object Oriented Software Construction, by Meyer

Maybe in recent years their catalogue has watered down, I don't know,
but at least they used to be top notch.
