Woody is (currently) the testing release of the Debian GNU/Linux OS. After some period of testing, Debian releases the testing version as stable. Expect Woody to come out some time soon - when, I hope soon enough (God knows for sure...). Testing is relatively stable, save for some few glitches. Sid is the codename of the unstable release. This is where you find the most current software packages. However, there's no guarantee that they won't break each other, nor would it be stable. I would prefer it if you want the bleeding-edge software, but I'LL NEVER RECOMMEND IT for production systems (such as your main server). The HURD is the Free Software Foundations project for a Unix-clone kernel++. It's still under development (for 10 years and counting?). Debian offered to release it as an alternative to the Linux kernel should it be ready for release. In my opinion, the theoretical ideas behind the Hurd is quite advanced for its time. Should it be released (Linus waited for it during the early days he was making Linux), we'll have the most advanced OS seen (in terms of technical superiority).
