It depends on your screen size. If you are using just vertual character consoles as an server, it can be really small even with color. 80 char * 25 raws * 8 bit color = 2 K Byte (Good old super VGA card) Even if you run X with XGA resolution (1024 X 768 X 32 bit color), 4MB is more than enough.
