I had the same trouble after my first self compiled kernel. This
happened cause i forget some things to set in the kernel configuration.
Do you have enabled the following? This is needed to mount root fs.
---> Networking options
<*> Unix domain soccets
---> Character devices
<*> Unix98 PTY support
