What does lspci say about your Rage 128? (You're looking for the device type; mine says 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 5446 If yours is device 5446, you can get it to work with XFree86 4.1 (the version in unstable). I'm happy with mine (though I will admit I don't do anything fancy like 3d or GL).
