You get a nice pretty screen to login to. You can use XDMCP. You can allow nice shutdowns without logging in first. You could have a list of users (with icons or mug shots) to point-n-click from rather than typing the name. I don't know if all of these are desirable, but those are some of the features provided by gdm. -D
