If you are posting to linux.debian.user, probably few people are seeing your post. Please post directly to the debian-user mailing list. As regards your question, can you provide details about what you did to try to install kde? I installed kde on my system by adding deb http://kde.debian.net potato main crypto optional to my sources.list, and doing apt-get install konqueror (I wanted konqueror) and I got kde (2.1.1) as a byproduct, with almost no effort. Once I had it, I decided to use it. I'd used it previously on SuSE. If you want kde it might be a good idea to get a minimal install going first. (Ie., don't try to download everything at once.) This certainly shouldn't involve hundreds of packages. I certainly did (almost) no manual intervention, just some slight tweaking of kdm so it would show kde as a login option. This is for potato (2.2r3) but you don't say what version you're using. This would certainly be relevant. I'm ccing this to debian-user so hopefully other people will see your post. Sincerely, Faheem Mitha.
