I think many X apps simply use the first font 'set' they have available and presumably it's based on the order you specify in your config files (unless a 'default' font is set, which in my experience and testing when I ran into this problem, is in fact *ignored*). I did two things that will definitely fix my problem. 1) I removed/purged xfs (it's only needed if you're 'serving' fonts to other X users (I think -- someone correct my wording of that if needed)). 2) Removed the 100dpi font package (and all references to it in my config files).
