Do you have /usr/share/vim/vim56/doc/help.txt or /usr/share/vim/vim56/doc/help.txt.gz on your system? If you find only help.txt.gz, $ zcat help.txt.gz > help.txt should fix this. I vaguely remember it was like this in potato 2.2r2. If this is same as one I experienced, bug was filed and maintainer properly fixed it from better approach than above quick fix. You can install single file from *.deb file if one use mc to open archive.
