You need a terminal that updates the utmp for starters.  If you can see your
terminal listed with the command 'w', your terminal is fine.  xterm will
work for this.  Next, the person who wants to talk to you should prbably
specify which terminal to contact you on.  Eg:

talk <username> tty1
or
talk <username> pts/0

The latter is used with X terminals and the formaer is for the console.
