Hello! I'm running potato with the 2.4.8-ac5 kernel (make-kpkg'd from the official source). My problems are the following:
* I configured ppp, vfat, sound, etc as modules. On a regular terminal (customized to runlevel 2), the modules are loaded automatically. But everytime I boot to runlevel 3 (loads gdm automatically), everytime i try to mount a vfat partition, the system would print out "vfat not supported by the kernel." I deduce that if vfat doesn't work, then other modules won't load in an X environment. I've got no plans to recompile the kernel as it'll make the (big) kernel already bigger. How do i workaround this? do i need to upgrade modconf or modutils? if so, how do i do it without "woodying" my system? I'm only using a pc with dial-up connection so i can't easily make a dist-upgrade without eating lots of time. *how do i make ppp run in 2.4.x kernels? i already downloaded the latest pppd from the samba ftp site. i believe i have to debianize it first. How do i do it without breaking the original ppp configurations (like pon, poff etc?) this is the only major constraint i have that hinders me from fully enjoying linux. i can't configure ppp right (i just am not comfortable with dual-booting to windows just to connect to the net). how do i do it (aside from RTFM)? *i have the sources of gcc-3.0 and glibc-2.2.3. Is it advisable to install them without debianizing them? are the consequences too grave? Thanks for taking time! Paolo Falcone __________________________________ www.edsamail.com
