OK, I didn't realise that you wrote pppconfig... this will be a bit vague, as I do not have access to my Linux box (I'm at work!), but here is basically what happened.
1) Ran pppconfig, it appeared to set up everything without trouble. 2) Used pon to connect, modem dials, tries to authenticate, fails and hangs up. This problem has occurred using most other (but not all) ppp setup utils (on other distros) as well. I can't be specific in this case about which config files I had to alter as I just copied over all the ppp related stuff from my RedHat partition to get a connection up and running. I will erase all the existing config files tonight, rerun pppconfig and work out which file isn't being set up correctly on my system.
