You'd guess that, but alas, you'd be wrong... =) There's a bug in XF 4.0.X that causes Xv not to work with the Voodoo3 card. I can't find the darn bug report right now (which is bothering me), but I was having the exact same problem, and I have a Voodoo3 as well. You can try running xine with the "-s" flag, which uses shared memory. It's slower, but it will work (worked for me).
