If you feel comfortable using a soldering iron and like the feel of SNES gamepads, try taking a look at the docs in the kernel source under Documentation/input/joystick-parport.txt to see you can connect console gamepads to your parallel port. I did this with an old SNES controller by snipping of its original connector and soldering 5 wires to a DB25 parallel port connector. I then use the 'gamecon' kernel module, and it works perfectly.
