If you're managing your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 with debconf, try:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:]# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree
and make sure that
[ ] pex5 [ ] xie [ ] glx
extensions don't have 'x' in their boxes (you _might_ want to do the same for speedo, too, while you're at it). Do a
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~]$ startx
to see if that helped.
If your editing /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 yourself, just comment-out those lines (add a '#' to the beginning of the line), and
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:]~$ startx
