The 2.4 Kernel requires newer versions of some programs than those in potato (see /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes). You can update the required packages from deb http://people.debian.org/~bunk/debian potato main but first please read http://www.fs.tum.de/~bunk/kernel-24.html -- Thomas Weinbrenner
