Well, as it turns out, the problem is actually with the hardware. I am not sure exactly what the problem is, as both 128 MB DIMMs are fine (according to a couple hours each under memtest86). But if they're both in the machine at once then it won't even boot reliably. I found that out on about the 4th reboot with both DIMMs in place. Taking either of them out resulting in the normal stability I've come to expect in the 2 years I've owned this machine. There shouldn't be any compatibility problems, as both DIMMs are 128 MB PC100 SDRAM, and pretty standard. Different vendors, but that's about it.
I really don't get it, but it definitely doesn't seem to be the kernel's fault.
