not only the sudo itself, but you can also log in with a regular
[non-root] account, use an Alt-F# key to bring up virtual terminal # (or
bring up another terminal in X-windows), log into the second virtual
terminal with a regular account, login as superuser 'su -' enter your
password, and do what you need to do as root while maintaining your
regular account in the first virtual terminal. just another idea....
