I highly recommend, for a first perl book, Sams Teach yourself Perl in 21 Days. Despite it's false title, it's a very well written book, the author Laura Lemay, is a very good technical writer.
Once you've tackled that book. I do recommend picking up Programming Perl (3rd Edition). It's the perfect reference book and I often go to it.
