You need /dev/3dfx if you want accelerated HW 3D with XFree 3.3.x, if you are using XFree 4.0.x (and above) you don't need the /dev/3dfx (or better /dev/3dfx is not supported, i remember faster than DRI but with some drawbacks: work only in full screen and could lock solid the box)... Andrea
