sound screwed up after last testing update

Just what it says. I did an "apt-get dist-upgrade"
yesterday and it took a while, so I left for work with it running. When
I returned and finished runing the configure sect. I returned to my
x-windows running enlightenment/w/gnome and now my sound system works
only as root. I looked at the various /dev/audio..dsp..snd etc and now
all of them are root.root and root.audio and none are executable. Anyone
else with this problem?
