Thanks to -ALL- who offered help with this problem. I successfully used a bootdisk of GNU parted to resize my /dev/hda3 to make room for FreeBSD, then created a /dev/hda4. I re-ran lilo as parted suggested, rebooted, then used fdisk to change the type on /dev/hda4 to BSD/386.
