Did you enable IEEE1284 transfer mode? In the kernel configurartion that would be: CONFIG_PARPORT_1284=y Sorry, but I compiled the sfuff into my custom kernel. So I'm not sure what the appropriate vanilla kernel module would be, though I suppose it would be something like "modprobe 1284" or a corresponding entry in your "/etc/modules" file. Also, what printer are you using? Some printers reject plain ASCII.
