Not necessarially. If you're in the habit of using RAM or loopback devices, use of the symlink method won't free the device resource. For most people, this means that after some finite number of mount/umount operations (4-16 for RAM, 8 for loopback), there are no more free device files for the next request. Keeping /etc/mtab separate, but manually syncing it if it gets out of step with reality, seems to work better. -- Karsten M.
