You only need the HAL module if you want to use Matrox's non-free card initialisation code. The driver is supposed to work without it. I'm using a CVS version of XFree86, version 4.0.99.1, and it supports the G450 quite well. You'd have to build it from source, but you don't have to patch anything. Alternatively, you could wait for XFree86 version 4.1.x.
