Two things: 1) Lots of the files on the CD are in fact symbolic links, and when you run CP it will not copy the symlinks, but the files themselves. Check the cp man page for a switch you can pass it that tells it not to copy the linked files, but recreate the links instead. 2) Depending on the block size of the CD and the HD, small files may take up much more space on your HD than on the CD.
