Here are some thoughts by Karsten M. Self:
It's broken ;-)
/usr/share/doc/lilo/Manual.txt.gz:
L <error> ... The first stage boot loader has been loaded and started, but it can't load the second stage boot loader. The two-digit error codes indicate the type of problem. (See also section "Disk error codes".) This condition usually indicates a media failure or a geometry mismatch (e.g. bad disk parameters, see section "Disk geometry").
Have you:
- re-run lilo (you're obviously going to have to boot from an alternate disk -- try a Debian install disk, the LinuxCare BBC, or Tom's Root/Boot (noting kernel compatibility & ext2fs issues w/ last).
- if you've re-run lilo, tried a different boot sector? I found I had to move from /dev/hda1 to /dev/hda recently for reasons which remain somewhat mysterious.
Might care to post your /etc/lilo.conf and output of
$ fdisk -l <primary disk>
Cheers.
