I got it working. The problem was, I had used alien to convert afterstep.rpm to .deb, had installed it, then dpkg -r it. The conffiles were mentioned in the status list. So I did a dpkg --purge afterstep, and then, viola, apt-get is working again. whew, after a week of desperate attempts, I got it atlast. You understand how i feel?
