Don't use it as root. There is no reason to. Rerun fetchmailconf.
Your conf file should look something like -
# Configuration created Sat Nov 18 15:38:41 2000 by fetchmailconf
set postmaster "kent"
set bouncemail
set properties ""
poll smtp.xxx.net with proto POP3
user [EMAIL PROTECTED] there with password xxxxxx is kent here
