I don't know if this helps, but I just purchased a TDK IDE CD-RW that runs nicely at 16x. It does not support power level checking that cdrdao wants, so I have to use --force. Other than that, it's burnt some 125 CD-R's in the last three weeks, and seems to work perfectly.
