I do not understand how compiling alsa from src prevents you from
using grep. Suggest that you check the above mentioned file.
What I mean to say was that I do not have alsa-base.conf file because I
compiled from src...

This says, that you have a sb16 module loaded. How did you compile
alsa? I modified /etc/alsa/alsa-source.conf and ensured that my card
was set, `grep -i card /etc/alsa/alsa-source.conf`:
ALSA_CARDS=ens1370
I compiled alsa from src (downloaded all three *.tar.gz files namely:
alsadriver, alsautils and alsalib) then configure alsadriver using
./configure --with-isapnp=yes, make install, then created ./snddevices, then
modprobe snd-card-sb16...also, I already had sound support compiled in my
kernel...
