I got rid of anything I could find dealing with alsa, both via apt/dselect and my earlier attempt at manually compiling/installing the modules. Then used apt-get to install the alsa-source package. Then I verified that my environment variable MODULE_LOC was still set to /usr/src/local/modules. I unzipped the alsa....tar.gz file to /usr/src/local, which created /usr/src/local/modules/alsa-driver and all the stuff below it. I then cd'd to /usr/src/linux (which is a symlink to /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.2). I then ran "make-kpkg modules_image". Then finding a new .deb in /usr/src, I cd'd to that directory and did a "dpkg -i alsa....deb". After installing, it asked if I wanted to run alsaconf now. I answered yes. This generated a few lines of text before bringing up debconf; a later run with "2>error.log" caught the messages, which were: > touch: creating `/etc/alsa/modutils/0.5': No such file or directory > grep: /etc/alsa/modutils/0.5: No such file or directory > modprobe: Can't locate module snd > cat: /proc/asound/version: No such file or directory > expr: syntax error > grep: /etc/alsa/modutils/0.5: No such file or directory > grep: /etc/alsa/modutils/0.5: No such file or directory > grep: /etc/alsa/modutils/0.5: No such file or directory > mv: cannot create regular file `/etc/alsa/modutils/0.5': No such file or > directo > ry > modprobe: Can't locate module snd > The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system. Within alsaconf, I selected the intel8x0 card, and accepted all the defaults. After debconf finished, it displayed the following: > Loading driver: > Starting ALSA sound driver (version none):modprobe: Can't locate module snd > no devfs available (even though using the kernel with devfs). > Setting the PCM volume to 100% and the Master output volume to 50% > The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system. > Could not initialize the mixer, the card was probably > not detected correctly. I'm leaning more and more to Gateway having shipped a "winhardware" sound system on this motherboard. Thanks for any help! Kent
