I am trying to make a custom 2.4.2 kernel for use on my Sid box. Here is what
I have done so far:

1) Downloaded kernel source from ftp.kernel.org
2) Extracted source to /usr/src/linux
3) Did "make xconfig" and selected what I wanted.

Here is where I'm not sure what I should do. I want to use make-kpkg to make
my kernel, but I want to do it right.
I have tried a couple times to make my own kernel, but it hasn't worked very
well. upon running lilo and rebooting, debian is looking for modules that
shouldn't be in my new kernel and then my NIC doesn't work even though I know I
have the right driver selected (via-rhine).

In addition to what I have selected with make xconfig, I also need to add my
soundcard drivers for my aurel vortex 2 card. They are in a .tar.gz file that
contains a makefile, a readme, mod_conf, one .h file and a few .c and .o files.

Would it be best to just install the soundcard drivers after I finish the rest
of the kernel?

what commands should I run to make the kernel so that I'm not running into the
modules problems that I describes above?

Thanks,
David Frey
