I forget who said it, but someone said (if I understood correctly) that aptitude would remove dependencies when a metapackage was selected for deletion. That didn't work for me. I installed the kdelibs metapackage then attempted to delete it --- 'aptitude remove kdelibs' removed the 45Kb metapackage, but not the underlying programs.
