Thanks, but I'm familiar with the above; what I couldn't do was to persuade the new server to run. However, as I indicated in a post yesterday, thanks to another poster on this list I discovered the problem. As so often happens, it was quite simple; I just needed to make /etc/X11/X point to /usr/bin/X11/XFree86. As soon as I did this it ran 4.0.2 perfectly.
